So it came as no surprise that she captured the hearts and attention of Netflix bingers across the country when she joined the LA-based luxury real estate brokerage, The Oppenheim Group, last season.
With the season 5 premiere today, Emma is back behind her desk and serves an even more integral role in the plot. And a few key things (hint: dating app Raya, Ben Affleck, a cute developer) left viewers with a whole lot of questions.
She chatted exclusively with Women’s Health about being back in the public eye, her experience on the dating apps, and those Ben Affleck rumors.
Who is Emma Hernan?
Emma, 30, is a CEO, who was born just outside of Boston in the small beach town of Scituate.
“It was one of the best places to grow up,” Emma told Women’s Health in an interview last year. “All of my neighbors were my best friends.”
Her family still lives in the Boston area, where her frozen food company Emma Leigh & Co is based. Side note: If you have not tried this woman’s vegan cheeseburger empanadas, you are missing out!
Emma is a bicoastal queen who flies from Boston to LA (private, naturally) every two weeks with her adorable pup Benny, whom she has dubbed her "boyfriend."
She is also poised to be the highest-earning realtor on Selling Sunset this season, which she says is a reflection of her hard work and networking abilities. Emma invests in startups and has been doing so for years. When it is time for founders to buy new houses—Emma is their girl to call!
Who is she dating right now?
If you’ve been on the ‘gram recently, you’ve probably noticed Emma hanging out with her (recently single) co-star and bestie Chrishell Stause. In fact, she once told me that she loves Chrishell more than “puppies and cheese.” Truly the highest compliment, IMO!
While Chrishell is dating Jason Oppenheim during season 5, Emma is still looking for love, and opens up about her dating life on camera for the first time.
“Going from being a super private person to being recognized out and about by paparazzi and fans is a whole new experience,” Emma tells WH. “I knew it came with the territory but there is definitely a learning curve.”
This season, Emma meets a handsome developer named Micah at a new property, and the banter is fabulous. Watch out, Benny!
“He’s a very flirty person,” Emma tells WH. “But so am I!”
On the show, she said she never flirts with clients, but it was hard not to with Micah (the developer). The pair do go on a date later in the season, and she tells WH that she and Micah still text regularly.
“Stay tuned for season 6 to see if the relationship lasts,” Emma jokes.
Yes, Emma matched with Ben Affleck on Raya.
Allow me to set the record straight.
Emma is NOT dating Ben Affleck. She was NOT a threat to the great Bennifer reunion, and she is baffled that this little tidbit got picked up in so many tabloids. (Ahem, Page Six, Daily Mail, I’m looking at you!)
Here’s the tea: Emma matched with Ben on Raya three years ago. They have the obvious Boston connection, and he asked her to get coffee, although not at a Dunkin’ much to my disappointment.
“Simmer down everyone—it was a very small text exchange years ago,” Emma tells WH. This was during Ben’s Navine era. (If you don’t remember, here's a refresher).
“It was super sweet and innocent,” she says, clarifying that the exchange was before Ben’s relationship with both Ana de Armas and the epic J.Lo reunion.
“If people knew who else I matched with on there, they’d go crazy,” Emma shares. Alas, she’s keeping those details to herself!
Wait, what is Raya, anyway?
Hold your Bumble and your Hinge. Raya is an ~exclusive~ dating app. Think of it as Tinder for celebrities and celebrity-adjacent people. Launched in 2015, the app quickly became a source of intrigue thanks to its famous users: Ben Affleck, Matthew Perry, Channing Tatum, John Mayer, and Lizzo, to name a few. Not only do you need to apply to get on the app, but you also have to be invited to apply by a current member.
But Emma says it’s just as difficult for her out there as it is for the rest of us.
“There are definitely a lot of f*ckbois in LA, that’s for sure,” she said in a confessional on the show. “So it’s definitely like swipe swipe swipe, it’s a full-blown workout!”
She tells WH that she uses Raya for networking, too. When she took a break from dating, she wrote on her profile that she was only looking for business connections. She’s met clients and friends through the app, which she recommends to anyone!
So...what happened between her and Micah, the developer from the show?
To borrow a phrase from Paris Hilton, fans see Emma SLIVING (a.k.a. “slaying” and “living her best life") on her date with Micah at his new bar on the show.
“I usually don’t mix business with pleasure, but Micah’s a little different,” she said in her confessional. “We had like one or two meetings... Not only is he attractive, but he is successful and confident.” Plus, he even set up a private table for her.
Always the professional, Emma brought her own empanadas to the restaurant. They are now the best-selling item on his menu, Emma tells WH.
“We’re not boyfriend and girlfriend, but we still talk,” Emma says. The two don’t live in the same city right now which makes any sort of real connection difficult. Emma’s "been there, done that" on the long-distance relationship front with her high school sweetheart, so she’s looking for someone in the area.
