Lili Reinhart reveals the real reason she called out Kim Kardashian's Met Gala weight loss

'I’ve certainly been to the point where I thought, I need help'

You may have noticed that Kim Kardashian's Met Gala dress courted quite a lot of attention earlier this year - and not just because she stepped out at the exclusive fashion do back in May in none other than Marilyn Monroe's iconic, crystal-infused 'Happy Birthday' dress from 1962.

Indeed, the 41-year-old reality star's revelation that she had embarked on a 'strict' diet to fit into the vintage frock, which required her to drop 16lbs in just three weeks, caused widespread debate. Her eating regime, which she promptly shared with Vogue, involved ditching all sugar and carbs in favour of what she described as the 'cleanest' veggies and protein.

Now, experts promptly denounced her extreme approach to nutrition and pointed out how unhealthy it actually was. However, one of the leading celebrity critics was Lili Reinhart who penned a passionate post on Instagram, suggesting that Kim's flippant remarks about quick-fix weight loss could encourage eating disorders among her fans.

'So wrong. So f****d on 100s of levels. To openly admit to starving yourself for the sake of the Met Gala,' the actress, 25, wrote at the time. 'When you know very well that millions of young men and women are looking up to you and listening to your every word.' She added that the mother-of-four's actions were 'disgusting' and 'harmful'.

Lili has now revealed why she feels so deeply about the subject, explaining that her protective response came after having struggled with her own body image issues in the past. In a new interview with IndieWire, she said: 'I’ve certainly been to the point where I thought, I need help, that I’m not OK mentally, that I wish I could go somewhere.' Then, when she read Kim's words, she felt that she could not 'just sit idly by'.

The Riverdale and Hustlers star also noted that, even if someone tried to reach out for help, good support can be hard to come by. 'Unfortunately, a lot of the resources are $90,000 retreats in Malibu, and I’m not about to just go sit on a lounge chair and have therapy for five days and be like, "Cool! I’m better!",' she added. 'I wish there were better resources for mental health, and in the sense that people need to be taken more seriously when they’re struggling.'

It comes after Lili gave her 28-plus million followers on Instagram greater insight into the ups and downs of her mental health earlier this year. 'I’ve been struggling with obsessive thoughts about my body/weight the last few months and it’s gotten pretty severe the last week,' she explained back in January. 'So I want to take a moment to be vulnerable and share this in the hope that any of you who are also struggling don’t feel so alone.'
